Senate Bill 528, authored by Sen. Carlin Yoder (R-Middlebury), would create the Indiana School Scholarship Tax Credit program. This school choice program would help to raise millions of dollars a year to fund scholarships for thousands of lower-income families to send their child to the private or public school of their choice. This bill passed through the Indiana Senate in February with a bipartisan vote of 35-15 and is now being considered in the Indiana House of Representatives. It has been assigned to the House Ways and Means Committee.Far too many Indiana children are forced to remain in a school that doesn’t meet their needs because their families cannot afford private school tuition or transfer fees. Parents want choices for a lot of reasons, including low achievement, safety issues, special needs, and a host of other reasons. Parents pay taxes to pay for schools, but they have few if any options in the schools their kids attend.

The Indiana School Scholarship Tax Credit plan is a creative approach to help families to access school choices, using a state tax credit to encourage charitable support of K-12 scholarship programs.

Let’s give parents a choice, and kids an opportunity.
