[INDIANAPOLIS] – The Property Tax System Is Broken! Property taxes are too high
in Indiana. Since 1980 property taxes have gone up over $4 billion. That’s over
450% in just 26 years.
The current property tax system is complicated, complex and virtually impossible for
the taxpayers to understand. The current property tax system is not fair to many
homeowners because their assessments are not correct.
The current property tax system is not fair:
Because when you buy a home you don’t know how much your property taxes
will go up each year.
Because you don’t know when you retire if you can afford to stay in your
home and pay your property tax bill.
Because you never really own your home (farm or business).
The loss of a job or a spouse, unexpected medical bills, or any large financial setback
that prevents you from paying your property taxes means you will lose your home.
Property taxpayers in Indiana deserve protection from future property tax increases,
and deserve a permanent and fair property tax solution.
Politicians at the state and local level continue to talk about property tax reform, but
the solutions are not permanent solutions. The only way to protect the taxpayers
(the homeowners, the farmers and the business owners) from future property tax
increases is to repeal property taxes in the Indiana Constitution. Property taxes are
like a weed, if you don’t pull a weed out completely by the roots—it will grow
back. Likewise if property taxes are not repealed completely and permanently
through a Constitutional Amendment, they will also come back.
During the past several weeks I have had the opportunity to discuss a Constitutional
Amendment to repeal property taxes with Hoosiers around the state. From the Ohio
River to Lake Michigan and many points in between, the response has been
overwhelmingly in support of such a repeal.
I will be aggressively pursuing the repeal of property taxes in the Constitution as the
only realistic solution to the property tax crisis. In order to accomplish this I will
continue to inform and unite Hoosiers around the state.
I have set up www.repealpropertytaxes.com to post updated information as well as
collect your comments on repealing property taxes in the Constitution. I encourage
you to send your comments to me via the website or call (888) 878-TAXES (8283).
