On Monday, February 10 the Senate Rules Committee held a hearing on HJR 3, the Marriage Protection Amendment.

After more than three hours of testimony the committee voted 8-4 to pass HJR 3 out of committee and to the floor of the Senate to be considered by all 50 Senators.

I’m grateful I had the chance to testify in favor of HJR 3!

We are glad that the committee voted to pass HJR 3 out of the committee rather than to have it die there!

Here is how the Committee voted:

Voting for HJR 3 – 8 Senators

Senator David Long, Chairman

Senator Ed Charbonneau

Senator Doug Eckerty

Senator Brandt Hershman

Senator Dennis Kruse

Senator Jim Merritt

Senator Brent Steele

Senator Tom Wyss

Voting against HJR 3 – 4 Senators

Senator Jim Arnold

Senator Jean Breaux

Senator Lindel Hume

Senator Tim Lanane

Next Step – Second Reading in the Senate!

The next step for HJR 3 is Second Reading in the Senate.  This will be the time when HJR 3 can be amended to return HJR 3 to its original version by putting back in the second sentence dealing with same sex civil unions that was taken out by the House of Representatives.

In order for HJR 3 to be voted on by the citizens to protect marriage between one man and one woman on November 4, 2014, HJR 3 must be returned to its original version.

Immediate Action Required!

Please contact your State Senator immediately with the following message:

“I deserve the right to be able to vote on November 4, 2014 to protect marriage between one man and one woman!  Please vote to change the Marriage Protection Amendment, HJR 3, back to its original language on second reading and then vote for the original version on final passage so I can vote November 4, 2014 to protect marriage in Indiana!”
