Indiana’s two race tracks in Shelbyville and Anderson want tax breaks of nearly $75 million over the next four years according to a recent report. These two race tracks paid $250 million each for the right to have 2,000 slot machines at each race track. This creates in essence two new land based casinos in Indiana. Now both race tracks are asking the General Assembly for tax breaks because they evidently are not making as much money as they thought they would.

The House of Representatives agreed to help the two racinos (race tracks with slot machines) and passed House Bill 1729 by a vote of 58-39. [Click Here] to see how your Representative voted. HB 1729 would give the two racinos a 5% reduction in the amount they pay in wagering taxes through 2013. This would result in a tax break of approximately $74.8 million for both racinos.

Help for Other Struggling
Businesses Defeated!

Before the final passage of House Bill 1729 Representative Eric Turner offered an amendment to HB 1729 to extend a tax break to other struggling businesses. His amendment was defeated by a vote of 39-56. [Click Here] to see the vote on the amendment. A yes vote is in favor of helping other Indiana businesses that are hurting in this difficult economy.
