Public Hearings on Common Core!

A major victory was won in the closing hours of the General Assembly when legislation passed to require public hearings on Common
Core.

Common Core is the National education plan supported by the Obama Administration. There are many unanswered questions about Common Core that the parents and taxpayers deserve answers. Here are just a few:

Is it true:

that Common Core is part of a Federal effort to collect massive amounts of personal data on families and children that will be shared with federal agencies and be made available to other groups;
that Indiana will lose control over educating Indiana children to unelected bureaucrats and special interests in Washington D.C. and elsewhere;
that the Indiana legislature never voted on, nor debated participating in Common Core: and
that Common Core will cost the taxpayers of Indiana hundreds of millions of dollars to implement?

It was right to mandate public hearings on Common Core to get answers to these and other critical questions that impact the taxpayers and children of Indiana!

Parental Choice in Education!

In 2011 Indiana passed the most expansive school choice law in the Nation.

Advance America supported this legislation and also supports expanding it so more parents can choose where to educate their child.

The Indiana Supreme Court upheld the 2011 law by a vote of 5-0 on 3-26-13!

The legislature passed House Bill 1003 this year which expanded the school choice law to permit siblings to be eligible for a school choice voucher along with children who live within the boundary of a failing school.

Advance America will continue to support efforts to help all parents choose the best school for their child!

Pro-Life Bill Signed Into Law!

Eric Miller Invited To Bill Signing At The State House!

On Wednesday morning, May 1^st Eric Miller attended the bill signing by Governor Mike Pence for Senate Bill 371.

Senate Bill 371 was the #1 pro-life bill of the session. Senate Bill 371 strengthens Indiana’s informed consent for abortion law and requires facilities that perform chemical abortions to meet the same standards as facilities that perform surgical abortions.

Memorial for Governor Bowen at the State House!

Governor Pence to Honor Former Governor Bowen on Wednesday, May 8th at the State House!

Governor Mike Pence will lay a wreath in the State House Rotunda at a memorial for former Governor Otis R. “Doc” Bowen at 8:00 am on Wednesday, May 8th.

Governor Bowen passed away on Saturday, May 4.

Governor Pence has asked that we send out the following information on the memorial for Governor Bowen:

Governor Mike Pence will lay a wreath at a public memorial for former Governor Otis R. Bowen in the Statehouse Rotunda at 8:00 a.m. EDT on Wednesday morning. The brief wreath laying ceremony will be open to the public. Statehouse doors will open at 7:30 a.m. EDT. Visitors should enter the East front doors of the Statehouse located at Market and Capitol Streets.

The Indiana State Police and the Indiana National Guard will post an honor guard at the memorial, which will be open to the public during Statehouse hours from 8:00 a.m. EDT to 5:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, May 8 and Thursday, May 9. Visitors to the memorial may sign a condolences book to pay tribute to the former governor.

Eric Miller, a longtime friend of Governor Bowen stated: “Doc Bowen was truly a unique individual. Doc loved his family, his state, and his country. His life was characterized by integrity, hard work and a servant’s heart. This included his time as a family physician, a soldier in WWII, a State Representative and Speaker of the House, Indiana’s 44th Governor and a member of President Reagan’s Cabinet.

I’m pleased that Governor Pence is going to honor Governor Bowen with this ceremony at the State House on Wednesday, at 8:00 am, and that Hoosiers will also have the opportunity to express their gratitude for Governor Bowen’s years of service and their sympathy for the family by stopping by the memorial on Wednesday or Thursday at the State House.”

Public Hearings Should Be Held On Common Core!

House Bill 1427 is authored by Representative Rhonda Rhoads. House Bill 1427 was amended in the State Senate to require public hearings on Common Core.

Russ Pulliam, an editorial writer for the Indianapolis Star, recently wrote an excellent editorial comparing Common Core to Obamacare.

Expanding School Choice!

Indiana has quite possibly the most expansive school choice law in the nation because of legislation passed in 2011! This year legislators have the chance to help more parents be able to choose the best school for their child!

House Bill 1003 would expand school choice to siblings and to some kindergarten students. Advance America supports expanding choice scholarships to all kindergarten children!

Here are just a few questions the supporters of Common Core hope they never have to answer at a public hearing:

Is it true that Common Core is part of a federal effort to collect massive amounts of personal data on families and children to be shared with federal agencies and made available to other groups?
Is it true that the Indiana legislature never voted on, nor debated participating in the Common Core?
Is it true that the Obama Administration is supporting Common Core?
Is it true that out of state groups are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in advertising to stop legislation that would require public hearings and a fiscal analysis of Common Core?
Is it true that Common Core will cost the taxpayers of Indiana hundreds of millions of dollars to implement?
Is it true that Indiana will lose control over educating Indiana children to unelected bureaucrats and special interests in Washington D.C. and elsewhere?

Two Victories at the State House!

Victory #1 – School Choice Bill Passes The Senate!

In 2011 Indiana passed the most expansive school choice law in the Nation. Advance America supported this legislation and also supports expanding it so more parents can choose where to educate their child. The Indiana Supreme Court upheld the 2011 law by a vote of 5-0 on 3-26-13! HB 1003 would do a number of things including: permitting siblings to be eligible for a school choice voucher and permitting some kindergarten children to also qualify for a voucher.

Senate Vote 27 – 23!

The Senate passed HB 1003 by a vote of 27-23. The House and Senate will now work to reconcile differences in the two versions of the bill.

Victory #2 – Pro-Life Bill Goes To Governor Pence!

Senate Bill 371 is the #1 pro-life bill of the 2013 General Assembly!

Senate Bill 371, as presented to the Senate on April 11, 2013, would require facilities that perform chemical abortions to meet the same standards as facilities that do surgical abortions; and would strengthen Indiana’s informed consent for abortion law by requiring a woman to certify in writing that she does not want to see an ultrasound of her unborn baby or hear her baby’s heartbeat. The Senate voted 35-14 to concur with changes made in the House on April 11, 2013. The bill now goes to Governor Pence!

Attack on Churches Stopped!!

House of Representatives Votes to Protect Churches!

Earlier this week I sounded the alarm about the attack at the State House on churches.
The situation looked pretty hopeless until people around the state started emailing and calling their Representative!

The Problem-Amendment to Senate Bill 305!

An Amendment with no public testimony, was added to Senate Bill 305 which would have destroyed the freedom churches now have!

Here are just 3 things the Amendment would have done:

FSSA will be given new power to close a church child care ministry without a court order!
A new criminal penalty is created, whereby a pastor could be charged with a crime, go to jail and pay a fine if he doesn’t operate his church ministry the way the government tells him to!
FSSA can force a church to pay a fine of up to $1,000 if the church does not operate the church ministry the way the government tells them to!

The People Got Involved!

Thousands of individuals contacted their Representatives on Monday, April 8 and Tuesday, April 9. The phone calls and emails worked!

Vote To Protect Churches on April 10!

On Wednesday, April 10 an amendment was offered to take out all of the language that would have harmed churches.

After a lengthy debate on the floor of the House of Representatives, the Representatives voted 68-27 to stop this attack on churches!

Urgent! Churches Under Attack at the Indiana General Assembly!

Background:

For over 30 years churches have been free to operate child care ministries without government control or being licensed by the government! Churches must still meet fire codes and sanitation regulations.

**This Freedom Is Under Attack!**

On April 3 the Family, Child and Human Affairs Committee amended Senate Bill 305 to give new massive and unprecedented power over churches to a state agency, The Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA)!

The state agency, FSSA, supports this attempt to harm churches in Indiana!

**Here are Just 3 Things the Amendment to SB 305
Would Do to Harm Churches!**
