Two Victories at the State House!

April 16th, 2013

Victory #1 – School Choice Bill Passes The Senate!

In 2011 Indiana passed the most expansive school choice law in the Nation. Advance America supported this legislation and also supports expanding it so more parents can choose where to educate their child.  The Indiana Supreme Court upheld the 2011 law by a vote of 5-0 on 3-26-13!  HB 1003 would do a number of things including:  permitting siblings to be eligible for a school choice voucher and permitting some kindergarten children to also qualify for a voucher.

Senate Vote 27 – 23!

The Senate passed HB 1003 by a vote of 27-23.  The House and Senate will now work to reconcile differences in the two versions of the bill.

Victory #2  – Pro-Life Bill Goes To Governor Pence!

Senate Bill 371 is the #1 pro-life bill of the 2013 General Assembly!

Senate Bill 371, as presented to the Senate on April 11, 2013, would require facilities that perform chemical abortions to meet the same standards as facilities that do surgical abortions; and would strengthen Indiana’s informed consent for abortion law by requiring a woman to certify in writing that she does not want to see an ultrasound of her unborn baby or hear her baby’s heartbeat.  The Senate voted 35-14 to concur with changes made in the House on April 11, 2013.  The bill now goes to Governor Pence!

Pro-Life Bill Passes the House!

April 4th, 2013

**Pro-Life Bill Supported by Advance America Passes the House!**

The #1 Pro-Life Bill of the 2013 General Assembly, Senate Bill 371, passed the House of Representatives on Tuesday, April 2nd by a vote of 70-26!

Senate Bill 371 was authored by Senator Travis Holdman and sponsored by Representative Sharon Negele in the House of Representatives.  SB 371 would require facilities that perform chemical abortions (RU 486 abortions) to meet the same standards as an abortion clinic that does surgical abortions.  This includes the informed consent for abortion laws which require an 18 hour waiting period.

Senate Bill 489 is also a pro-life bill.  It is authored by Senator Mike Young.  It passed the Senate earlier and the language was added to SB 371 in the House Public Policy Committee.  The language from SB 489 (now in SB 371) would strengthen Indiana’s current informed consent for abortion law.  SB 489 would, among other things, require that a woman seeking an abortion certify in writing that she does not want to see an ultrasound of her unborn baby and hear the baby’s heartbeat before having the abortion.  Hopefully a woman who is thinking about an abortion will choose to not have the abortion when she learns that she can see an ultrasound of her baby and hear her baby’s heartbeat!

Pro-Life Bills Pass The Senate!

March 11th, 2013

Pro-Life Bills Supported by Advance America Go To The House!

Two pro-life bills are moving through the General Assembly! Advance America continues to support pro-life legislation in the General Assembly to help protect unborn children and make sure women seeking an abortion are provided with accurate information.

Senate Bill 489 is authored by Senator Mike Young.  SB 489 would strengthen Indiana’s current informed consent for abortion law.  SB 489 would, among other things require that a woman certify in writing that she does not want to see an ultrasound of her unborn baby and hear the baby’s heartbeat before having the abortion.  Hopefully a woman who is thinking about an abortion will choose to not have the abortion when she learns that she can see an ultrasound of her baby and hear her baby’s heartbeat!  The bill passed the Senate by a vote of 40-10.  The House sponsor is Representative Martin Carbaugh.

Senate Bill 371 is authored by Senator Travis Holdman.  Senate Bill 371 would require facilities that perform chemical abortions (RU 486 abortions) to meet the same standards as an abortion clinic that provides surgical abortions.  This includes following the informed consent for abortion laws which require an 18 hour waiting period.  The bill passed the Senate by a vote of 33-16.  The House sponsor is Representative Sharon Negele.
